Fundamental No. 13 – Work Smart

Work Smart - Be organized and plan your work for maximum efficiency. Have all the tools necessary before starting your work. Be thoughtful about your schedule, and have a game plan for your calls, your tasks, and your workday.  Know the priorities and work on them first. Work with a sense of urgency and get stuff done. Hard Work vs. Smart Work Is it important to work hard or not?  Yes. Of course, you have to be ‘smart’ about working hard, but hard work always pays. Just being smart or working smart is only half of the real story. The [...]

Fundamental No. 12 – Be Positive.

Be Positive - You have the power to choose your attitude. Choose to be optimistic and see the possibilities. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Optimism creates energy and energy creates success. Positive thinking: Positively Ridiculous? For all those glass half-empty types, let's dive right into the negative side of this fundamental: reasons why a positive mental attitude doesn't work. (For glass half-fullers: don't worry, there will be a rebuttal): 1. Negative thinking is more realistic. 2. Positive thinking won't change the reality of things, and positive thinkers have no clue about the real world. 3. Positive thinkers are annoying and [...]

Fundamental No. 11 – Be Consistent

Let's define Consistent: Logically ordered and/or following the same pattern. Unchanging; steady. Being in conformity with a set of rules, guidelines or policies. Fundamental No. 11: Be Consistent. Follow our operating procedures to ensure consistency and high performance. Consistency is critical to ensuring that both internal and external customers know exactly what to expect. Think from a process viewpoint. Highly successful companies have a process orientation that produces consistency.  They look to create standardized best practices for every action. The reason Charlie Murren came up with the 30 fundamentals that we discuss every morning in our huddle is to establish the foundation to produce [...]

Fundamental No. 26 – Celebrate Success

Celebrate Success - Catching people doing things right is more effective than catching them doing things wrong. Regularly give, receive and ask for meaningful acknowledgement and appreciation - in all directions throughout the company. Recognize Success We celebrate people on numerous occasions: congratulating them on birthdays, weddings, baby showers and so much more.  But do you remember to take the time to celebrate your hard-working team?  Do you commend their efforts towards achieving milestones?  Let’s not forget that a company’s greatest resource is it's employees. Without them very little would be achieved.  While some may wonder why you have to celebrate [...]

Fundamental No. 23 – Go the Extra Mile!

How to Succeed in Life Step One: Show up. 80% of life is showing up.  Isn’t that what Woody Allen said? Step Two: Do a good enough job that you don't get in trouble. Most people stop here. However, those that seek greatness know there is a third step. Step Three: Go the Extra Mile. Be willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish the job...plus a little bit more. Take the next step to solve the problem. Even if it takes doing something that's not in your job description, its the extra mile that separates the average person from the superstar. [...]

Fundamental No. 10 – Speak Straight

Speak Straight – Speak honestly in a way that helps to solve a problem, rather than simply making a point.  Make clear and direct requests.  Be willing to ask questions, share ideas, or raise issues that may cause conflict when it’s necessary for team success.  Address issues directly with those who are involved or affected. What is Speaking Straight? Speaking Straight is being direct, clear, and honest in our communication. Good or bad, most individuals like hearing the straight truth. No beating around the bush or hidden agendas, please! Now, this is not to say that we should "dump our [...]

Fundamental #8 – Honor Commitments

Deliver on your commitments and meet deadlines every time. This includes being on time for phone calls, appointments, meetings, and promises. Do what you say you're going to do when you say you're going to do it. If a commitment can't be fulfilled; notify early and agree on a new commitment to be honored. The ability to follow up on what is promised may be one of the most important qualities you can ask for in a person, and the most important mechanism behind a successful working team. If you don't honor your commitments, it has a domino effect that [...]
