Plant Vogtle Building 305 Site Preparation

As part of the Plant Vogtle Units 3 & 4 expansion, C.A. Murren provided design-build shoring and excavation services for the Communication Support Center (Building 305), a critical facility located within one of the nation’s most complex nuclear construction projects.

 The Work

The project required the design and installation of more than 10,000 square-feet of soldier pile and lagging shoring to support a 22-foot-deep excavation located just 14 feet from a newly constructed two-story administration building and critical plant infrastructure. Our team completed approximately 16,700 cubic yards of structural excavation, placed 2,200 cubic yards of controlled low-strength material (CLSM) backfill, and safely removed the temporary shoring system upon completion of foundation construction.

 Project Highlights

What made this project unique was the level of precision required. The excavation was performed in a highly visible area near occupied facilities and critical infrastructure, where even minor deviations could have significant consequences. The work took place under constant observation from project stakeholders, site personnel, and senior leadership responsible for the overall Plant Vogtle expansion.
