Plant Vogtle Units 3 & 4 Cooling Tower

As part of the expansion of one of the nation’s largest nuclear power facilities, C.A. Murren was selected to construct the cooling tower foundations and hot water intake tunnels for Units 3 & 4 at Plant Vogtle.

 The Work

The project required the excavation of approximately 250,000 cubic yards of material to depths reaching 30 feet, installation of 104 drilled caissons extending 120 feet below grade, and construction of two reinforced concrete intake tunnels measuring 20 feet by 20 feet and 275 feet in length. Our team also placed 9,600 cubic yards of concrete, installed more than 1,100 tons of reinforcing steel, constructed concrete pile caps, and completed approximately 90,000 cubic yards of structural backfill.

Working within an active nuclear construction environment demanded exceptional attention to safety, quality control, and procedural compliance. Every phase of the work was performed under rigorous oversight and exacting standards, requiring close coordination with multiple stakeholders across a complex jobsite.

 Project Highlights

Our successful execution of this project helped establish a long-term relationship at Plant Vogtle, where C.A. Murren continued to support critical infrastructure construction through multiple phases of development.
