MOX Facility Site Development

 Savannah River Site | Aiken, South Carolina

C.A. Murren performed complete site development for the 100-acre Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility, one of the most secure and highly regulated federal facilities in the nation.

 The Work

The project included excavation of more than one million cubic yards of material, including mass grading for building foundations; construction of detention ponds; and development of critical site infrastructure. Our team installed over 5,700 linear feet of reinforced concrete storm drainage, relocated and restored existing streams, realigned a natural creek, placed more than 43,000 tons of riprap, and completed extensive erosion control measures across the site. Additional work included excavation, transport, and disposal of approximately 50,000 cubic yards of ash material within an onsite landfill.

 Project Highlights

What set this project apart was the extraordinary pace of production. Over a seven-month period, C.A. Murren moved approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of earth — averaging more than 10,000 cubic yards per day. For comparison, a typical large-scale earthmoving operation may average roughly 4,000 cubic yards per day.

Achieving this level of production required exceptional planning, equipment management, field leadership, and workforce coordination. The project demonstrates our ability to deliver large-scale site development under demanding schedules while maintaining the safety, quality, and environmental standards required on a federal nuclear facility.
