Georgia International Olympic Horse Park Stadium

In preparation for the 1996 Olympic Games, C.A. Murren was awarded a contract by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games to construct a permanent 10,000-seat concrete stadium at the Georgia International Horse Park.

 The Work

The project included construction of the stadium seating structure, retaining walls, ADA access ramps, foundations for stadium lighting, sidewalks, handrails, steps, and installation of stadium seating. With the Olympic equestrian events rapidly approaching, the project carried an aggressive schedule and significant liquidated damages for late completion.

What made this project exceptional was the challenge itself. In 1995, many larger contractors declined to pursue the work because they believed a permanent concrete stadium of this size could not be completed within the required 90-day time frame. C.A. Murren accepted the challenge and developed an innovative approach to accelerate construction.

Faced with a schedule many believed was unattainable, C.A. Murren developed an innovative solution by modifying a slipform curb machine to place two stadium seating risers simultaneously. The idea dramatically increased production rates and became the key to meeting the aggressive deadline. Prior to construction, crews spent a week conducting training and mock-up runs to refine the process and ensure quality. Once construction began, concrete placement started daily at 3:00 a.m. to take advantage of cooler temperatures during the Georgia summer, while multiple crews worked simultaneously on retaining walls, ramps, foundations, and site improvements.

 Project Highlights

Through continuous collaboration, field innovation, and relentless execution, we completed the project 10 days ahead of schedule. The successful delivery of the stadium provided a critical venue for Olympic equestrian events and demonstrates C.A. Murren’s ability to solve complex challenges, innovate in the field, and perform under demanding schedules where success was not guaranteed. More than three decades later, the project remains a defining example of the ingenuity, determination, and craftsmanship that we continue to deliver today.
